October 3

Hello Everyone,
I have a lot to tell you this week, so hang on to your hat!

Spelling:  This is a review week, so the workbook has a bit of everything.  The test is a different format.  There are only 20 words.  The test is the “fill in the bubble” format of the standardized test for 4th grade. It is a good way to learn how to do the tests for the spring.
Art: Mrs. Wade is teaching us about some art Masterpieces this year and a few of them involve paint!  Please send an extra-large old shirt for the kids to keep in their lockers for those lessons.
Pledge:  We are going to be doing the Pledge of Allegiance on Spirit 105.3 on October 20, in the 6 am hour! There is an additional piece of this that is a secret.  See the email from the CCA office on Friday.
Bible Verse tests:  I am changing the tests to be on Mondays.
World Vision:  CCA supports two children through World Vision. We collect an offering at chapel each week.  Our purpose is to help bring life giving and life changing support to these two children.  I hope to teach our children the blessing of generosity! We will collect the money at any time during the week and take it to chapel on Tuesdays.
Carnival:  The carnival is coming up- October 26!  We have ½  hour slots to help with our game from 5:30-8:00.  Please email me if you can help or sign up on the clip board outside the door to our room.
PassPort:   We have an adjustment in this month’s assignment.  First, an explanation:  Last year somehow several grades were out of sync with the way the levels should work.  Therefore this year we need to catch up. In the fourth grade we will be testing on levels 1-4.  This means that the students will need to learn both levels 3 and 4 as new information.  We will focus on level three in class early in the month.  Therefore level three should be reviewed at home and level four   taught/learned at home as homework.  (New families that have never been part of PassPort please concentrate on levels 1-3- those will be the ones that the new students will be tested on).

Homework:

Spelling: Lesson 6 workbook and test are both Friday.  We will be testing in the new format described above.
Math:  We will practice 4’s and reverse this week.   Written quizzes are each Friday.
Social Studies:  Explorers! Do you know who discovered your cinnamon?  We will soon.
Science: Simple machines with load, effort and work.
Reading- Average 20 minutes per day. Please help your student find three events and what happened “ because of that” in their home reading.    The reading calendar is one of the student’s reading grades. The October calendar went home last week.
Bible:  Deuteronomy 31:6

Upcoming Events:
October 9            Spirit Day: Sports Day
October 16/17   Professional Development NO SCHOOL
October 24         School Carnival
October 30         Passport Testing
November 5       End of the first quarter

Dear Parents,
It was good to see so many of you last week at McTeacher night- you probably couldn’t miss the fact that I was the  CCA’s McTeacher good fairy princess….. such silliness , but thank you for your support!
I am sending home the passport for this month with this letter.  We have an adjustment in this month’s assignment.  First, an explanation:  Last year somehow several grades were out of sync with the way the levels should work.  Therefore this year we need to Catch Up. Homework:

Spelling: Lesson 5 workbook and test are both Friday.  Please be sure and look over your student’s work in the spelling workbook, then sign it.
Math:  Onward to 4’s this week.  We will practice 4’s and reverse this week.   Written quizzes are each Friday. Social Studies:  We will finish our work on maps and land forms this week.  Then on to the Explorers! Do you know who discovered your cinnamon?  We will soon.
Science: Simple machines with load, effort and work
Reading- Average 20 minutes per day. Please help your student find the problem, the settng, and some characteristic of the main character in their home reading. March 31

 Dear Parents,
Please check to see if you can accompany us on our field trip to the Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge.    I have one parent confirmed , thank you Mrs. George,   but I need two or three more! If you sent an email with your availability and I missed it, please let me know right away.   The Reserve has a very strict adult to kid ratio.    It will be a very enjoyable, active day.  8:40-2:30 on April 29.
*** Also, I hope you have made plans to come to our chapel presentation.  It is on the schedule below.

Homework:
Spelling:  Lesson 28. It focuses on suffix’s .  Test and workbook are due Friday as usual.
Math:   We have begun to work on double digit multiplication .  Please give them a sample several times this week, ie 27x 32 (write it vertically)  and have them solve it.
Social Studies:   Thank you to Mr. Jensen, Mr. Graham, and Mrs. Brimmer for helping us with our 4th of July in March party.  The rain didn’t even put out our sparklers!  I sent home the April PassPort  map today, our test is the day after everyone else’s test, because we will be on our field trip.
Science:  Science Fair is our focus for the next month.  If you have any questions, please email or we can talk about it at conferences.  I sent home the work that we have been doing in class.  We have gathered some facts, thought about some ways to group those facts (sub topics), discussed/reviewed  the format for the report, and brainstormed some catchy introductions.  The remaining work on the report needs to be done at home, and brought to school on April 17.
Because this is a science focus month, I have included a “Science Impossibility” activity instead of the usual  Ken Ken .   These are great fun and have some learning thrown in.  It should only take 5 minutes.  If you’d like some more Ken Ken’s just go to Kenken.com and you will find more that you could ever use.
Reading:  The March reading calendar is due by  Wednesday, April 2.   Remember that March’s book report is a cube with the various parts of a story on each face. It was due today Monday, March 31.
